Why Are the Karkonosze Mountains and Szklarska Poręba
a Trekking Paradise?

When choosing a mountain holiday, you look for places that combine wild nature with comfort and proximity to trails. Szklarska Poręba is an absolute number one in Poland in this regard. Here's why mountain trekking enthusiasts fall in love with this area:

  • Two Mountain Worlds Within Reach
    • By staying at the AQUA Residence, you gain access to two completely different mountain ranges. Within a short walk, you will find the rugged, monumental Karkonosze Mountains with majestic peaks. On the other side, the town is surrounded by the Izerskie Mountains – gentle, mysterious, with vast clearings and peat bogs, perfect for long, calming hikes.
  • The Kingdom of Karkonosze Waterfalls
    • Right near Szklarska Poręba, nature has created its most beautiful masterpieces. You can admire the highest waterfall in the Polish Karkonosze – the Kamieńczyk Waterfall, hidden in a deep, fairytale-like ravine, and the incredibly picturesque Szklarka Waterfall. Both places take your breath away in every season.
  • Trails Adapted to Your Pace
    • Whether you plan a calm walk with children, a romantic weekend for two, or an intense all-day training session before tackling higher mountain areas – here you will find the perfect trail. Hundreds of kilometers of well-marked trails allow for flexible planning of routes of any difficulty.

Szklarki Waterfall is the second largest waterfall in the Polish Karkonosze Mountains. The water falls here in a characteristic cascade narrowing towards the bottom, creating an amazing spectacle of sounds and sights. This route is a proposal for an extremely relaxing experience, perfect for any weather – also ideal for family trips with children.

Difficulty level: Easy (the trail is gentle, with slight elevations, well prepared)

Distance: approx. 7 km | Time: approx. 2.5 h

Waterfall cascading between mossy rocks into a calm pool, surrounded by lush evergreen forest.

This trip is an ideal, approximately 3-hour loop. Starting from the AQUA Residence, you will first visit the spectacular viewpoint at Krucze Rocks, then take forest trails to reach the waterfall. The return route will lead you along a different, gentler path through the charming, green corners of Szklarska Poręba, creating a complete, closed route without the need to return the same way.

Difficulty level: Easy / Medium (the last section of the approach to the shelter is rocky and steeper, the return is very gentle and comfortable)

Distance: approx. 7 km | Time: approx. 2.5 h

Sunlit waterfall cascading over moss-covered cliffs into a tranquil forest pool

Śnieżne Kotły are one of the most spectacular and monumental places in the entire Karkonosze Mountains. These two post-glacial cirques (Small and Large) press into the mountain ridge with steep, rocky walls. The view from the viewpoints on the edge of the cliff is breathtaking, and the distinctive building of the relay station (the former shelter) towering over the abyss is one of the most iconic symbols of these mountains. This is a proposal for a demanding, all-day trekking for those seeking true mountain challenges and incredible panoramas.

Difficulty level: Difficult / Advanced (long route, with a large elevation gain, requiring good fitness and stable footwear).

Distance: approx. 20 km | Time: approx. 7.5 h

The trail is very pleasant, even, and sheltered by forest, which makes it perfect for trekking even on windier days when conditions on the main ridge of the Karkonosze are too difficult. The return route through the charming Zakucie and the area around the PKP station will allow you to discover Szklarska Poręba from a completely different perspective.

Difficulty level: Medium (the ascent is steady but gentle and safe)

Distance: approx. 14 km | Time: approx. 5 h

The mountains are a gigantic, natural playground for the youngest, teaching a love of nature and sparking imagination. Szklarska Poręba is perfectly suited for taking the first steps on the trail – you will find plenty of safe, wide paths that you can easily navigate even with a stroller or a young child.

The legendary Szklarki Waterfall, the fairytale cascades of Kamieńczyk known from “The Chronicles of Narnia,” and the mysterious forest paths around our residence will turn your little ones into true explorers.

At AQUA Residence, we know perfectly well how to plan a successful day with the family. Before heading out, ask at the reception for the most comfortable routes for small feet, and after returning from the trail, let the children enjoy carefree play in our safe play zone while you recharge your energy in the jacuzzi. Mountain memories last a lifetime – start creating yours right here!

Practical Tips Before Going on the Trail

  • Check the weather
    • Conditions in the city often differ drastically from those on the Karkonosze ridge. When there is a calm spring in Szklarska Poręba, on Szrenica or the Snowy Cirques there may be gusty winds, and the temperature can be several degrees lower. Always check the current announcements on the Karkonosze National Park (KPN) or GOPR website before setting out.
  • Dress in layers
    • The layering principle is key to comfort. Even on a warm day, pack a lightweight rain and windproof jacket and a warmer sweatshirt in your backpack. Stable shoes with a grippy sole (preferably ankle-high trekking boots) are also very important – Karkonosze trails can be rocky and become slippery after rain.
  • Charge your phone and save emergency numbers
    • A phone on the trail is your safety. Charge the battery to 100% before setting out and take a power bank with you (batteries drain much faster in low temperatures). Save the mountain emergency number in your phone: 601 100 300 or download the free Ratunek app.
  • Food and hydration are essential
    • During physical effort in the mountains, the body needs a constant supply of energy. Bring at least 1.5 liters of water per person and high-energy snacks (nuts, chocolate, cereal bars). Eat a nourishing, wholesome breakfast in our hotel restaurant.
  • Plan your time and know your limits
    • In the mountains, distances are measured in hours, not kilometers. When planning your route, always allow time to return before dusk. If hiking with children, add about 30-50% extra time, as indicated on the maps, for rest and play.
  • Nature is protected
    • Remember you are entering the Karkonosze National Park area. Stay only on designated, marked trails, do not make noise, and take all your rubbish back with you. Let’s work together to keep these mountains beautiful for future generations!
